Peggie- You are SO AWESOME......I told you last night but I'll say it again...you have grown SO MUCH as a singer and you know why......you are stretching ...new tunes...and your dynamics are so GOOD....give me the soft notes and well as the Big Money Notes every time....We all wanna hear the Big Money Notes which you can do in your sleep AND do so well...what makes a performer interesting (aside from your keen ability to get the crowd going and involved) is the contrast ...whether it be choice of material...tempos....and the building of a tune...the emotional build-up which is achieved with dynamics....a technique thing...but it goes beyond that....you GET IT GIRL...you UNDERSTAND the song.....so key to making music.... Forgive my rambling but I have such strong feeling about this subject....I just love to listen to singers who GET IT and can GET IT ACROSS! Love Ya, Ms. Liz

We happened into Cavallino's for dinner tonight and stayed to enjoy the vocalist and the band. We had a great time and we were pleasantly surprised by you singing a few tunes. You sounded terrific. When will you be performing there? We had never been to the lounge there before, but enjoyed it immensley. Hope to see you at some other venues too. Thank you, Your newest fan, Kristine

Hi Peggie, I came across your web site via a link from the Fabulous 690. Your cover of At Last knocked me out and I am writing to ask permission to use it on a future podcast. My podcasts are a promotional effort for a nostalgia-oriented store and soda fountain I am hoping to open here in Grass Valley. (Grass Valley is a small gold rush era town in the Sierra foothills, about 60 miles northeast of Sacramento.) I can't say there are millions of listeners to the podcasts, but there are some and I get occasional emails; and it's just an effort to get out the word in the community. Content-wise, my podcasts have run the gamut from doo-wop and 60s pop to mainstream jazz. My first love is old jazz (I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 50s and 60s and my grandfather was a record collector, so I knew early Bing Crosby and Benny Goodman as well as the Beach Boys etc.). My grandfather knew Paul Tanner who had been a trombone player with Glenn Miller and played Theremin on Good Vibrations. It was very cool that you were on Gary Owens's show -- we listened to him back in the day when he was on KABC (I think--it could have been KMPC--they were both music stations back then) before the Laugh-In days. Glad to learn he's still in the business. What I am thinking of for my next one is to feature contemporary artists who are keeping the tradition alive in their own way (Jane Monheit, Madeleine Peyroux, etc.). And that is where I think your work fits right in. My first thought was to segue your version of At Last with Etta James, then thought it would be a better idea to follow (or precede) it with the Glenn Miller version with the Bob Eberle vocal. I would also run a link to your site and announce any upcoming gigs you would like. I wish I lived closer to SoCal so I could catch you live; last time I was down there was about 3 years ago when we took an Australian exchange student for a tour of Warner Bros., Disneyland, etc. Do you have any Bay Area or Sacramento appearances in the plans? Sacramento has been pretty good for live jazz although in recent years I think less so (Don't want to give the impression that I go out much; this is all second hand info). Anyway, please let me know if this is OK with you, or if not, I'll just enjoy it for myself. Thanks from a new fan, Doug Miller Grass Valley

Friends Mark the Passing of Ron Donath (Dec 29, 2005) LA-area musician and composer Ron Donath passed away December 22, 2005. Known to his friends as a kind spirit with a great sense of humor and an extra helping of talent, Ron lived his life to the fullest doing exactly what he loved to do -- writing and performing up until the end. A memorial service has been set for Friday December 30 at the First Friends Church in Whittier, 13205 E. Philadelphia St. at 10:00 am. He was born August 1, 1936 in Minneapolis, Kansas. He led the family band at the age of four and played classical music on the piano by six years of age. At the time, Ron was considered a musical prodigy. Before Ron graduated high school, he was an accomplished pianist and saxophonist. Ron met the love of his life, Patricia in 1956 and one year later they were married. While his musical career was on the rise, Ron was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 23. By 1961 he was honorably discharged and was again able to pursue music. Ron traveled the country performing and, in 1965 while on the road, his only son Rick was born in Miami, Florida. In 1974, after performing around the country, Ron and Patricia made their home in Whittier, California where they raised their family. This is where their two grandchildren, Jessica and Amy were born. In 1998, Ron and Patricia settled in Chino Hills. Ron touched everyone he knew with his deep love of music; this is his legacy. During his career, he worked with some of the best musicians in the world. He gathered many friends along the way and was known as much for his kindness as his talent. Ron, Thank you for your Talent, Kindness, Patience, Sense of humor and wonderful work ethic and attitude! Miis you and I am truly blessed to have had you play for me!Dear Pat and Rick, We are with you and there for you whatever you need! Our sympathy and hearts and prayers are with you! Love, Peggie

Peggie Perkins with the Luther Hughes Trio atThe Long Beach Westin Hotel Jazz singing is alive and well as exemplified by the beautiful Peggie Perkins accompanied by bassist Luther Hughes’s splendid trio, November 3rd. Ed Czach performed the piano duties, inimitable Hughes at the bass and longtime fine drummer, Frank Wilson. Perkins is a contralto and “has been singing from birth, even before she started talking,” as quoted from her most interesting website. She is Chicago born and from a musical family, her mother being a professional singer, her father an artist. Deciding to become a professional singer at an early age, she has sung at hundreds of venues in, not only the U.S.A., but has done some internationally touring as well. “You Stepped Out of A Dream,” was this trio’s opening number. Their solos were in top form. When Perkins comes to the stage, she portrays an illustrious aura of showmanship. She lets the audience know that they’re there as well as she and musicians for whom she’s playing and singing to. Her first song, “Ain’t Misbehavin,’” came forth in a happy, jovial and well accepted approval from the audience. She has a wide spectrum of songs, covering standards, blues, and Latin. Her voice is sultry and ‘gets down’ with all the necessary soul very convincingly. During “The Girl From Ipanema,” Hughes continued to deliver another great bass solo, remarkably as ever. He has put together many groups and tonight was no exception. Pianist, Ed Czach has worked with him on several projects, including a recent CD Luther Hughes and The Cannonball-Coltrane Project, which is turning out some fine recognition for Hughes and his musicians. Czach played some terrific piano lines and harmonic chordal voicings. Frank Wilson’s drumming has forever been a stalwart of drumming expertise and tasty soloing. Of the many memorable all time standards, Perkins did. Here are a few: “Tenderly,” “All Right, Ok You Win,” “Fever,” “Night and Day,” “Deed I Do,” “Blue Skies,” “Route 66,” “Angel Eyes,” and my favorite of the evening, “Moon Dance.” Perkins’ style struts and rocks through all her tunes. Her showy appearance is lovely. “I’m Beginning To See The Light,” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” brought out these qualities exclusively. This lady puts on a swinging, wonderful show! See her website, www.peggieperkins.com and look again for her appearances in the regional area. Recommended. Glenn A. Mitchell For L.A. Jazz Scene, December, 2005 issue.

Hey Peggy this is bugger. The picture guy remember, remember? Hey I just found you. I just got in from a Clipper game and was messing with the channels trying to find you. I went to 19 and the MC said here is Peggie Perkins. About that time you broke into "At Last" in this sexy out fit showing all the right curves. Man you got to wear that one so I can get pictures. Whew! Hey you knocked them dead in MORE than one way. :-)) And I HAVE to admit you are busy. :-)) Now I have to figure what this is. Some one else is singing now, OK but NOT as good as you. Hey Peggy, I always enjoy hearing you sing. The night you showed up at Jax in Glendale where Barbara Reed and Jeff Fish we're playing was the first time I heard you sing. You blew me away. We had a blast that night honoring Nikki Matthews for the possitive impact she had on so many lives during her much to short time on this earth. Barbara shared her stage with Llew Matthews, you, and other wonderful talents making it a night of GREAT MUSIC I'll never forget. I'm really glad I had the chance to meet and hang out, even play my shakers with you while you were singing. I've heard you sing many times since then and truly enjoy each and every time I have the pleaser of catching you and the wonderful players you have sharing the stage with you. You're an act everyone should have the pleasure of hearing. Keep singing and stay in the biz, you have what it takes to make the big dream come true. Love ya girl,I be coming to hear you again soon. Hi Peggie, wish I had gotten to Baci's earlier that night, but - as I had mentioned I heard you at Kikuya's a few months ago with Barbara Reed. If you go to the Reiners' party on 10/9 I'll see you there, and maybe you'll hear my playing when I sit in. It would be great to gig with you sometime - my playing can also be heard on the "Demos" page of my website, as above - maybe you can take a listen. I know you have plenty of pianists at your fingertips, though...with players like Llew Matthews, Mark Massey, Ron Kobayashi, etc., even though I'm very good, I don't know if I'd have a chance/could compete!...Well, whether I gig with you or not, please feel free to refer me to working singer friends/colleagues you may know who might need a good pianist (I can rehearse once 'gratis' if there's a definite gig involved). I have gigs but I want MORE!!!...Thanks, Peggie, and hope to see you soon. Best...Nina / P.S. Hope you got my "almost 800" song list!!...

Peggie, Once again I enjoyed seeing you last Saturday, and was especially happy my wife got her first opportunity to hear you. I did want to especially thank you for allowing me to try and sing in public (You Go To My Head). While I was so nervous I did not do a second chorus, it was a step forward in breaking the barrier of fear. The fact that you are secure enough to allow various folks to sing is a very positive statement about who you are. Thanks again, you did a great job!! Best Regards, DR Curtis

'Wolfman' known as man with heart Police looking at crash death of Frank Lucero for link to cardiac problems. By Tracy Manzer Staff writer< Lucero's physical heart, however, was far more troubled than his emotional one, and investigators are now trying to determine if his prior medical problems played a part in his death following a car crash Tuesday. Most close-knit communities have a local fixture that nearly everyone knows and adores. For Huntington Beach, and several karaoke clubs scattered around Orange and South Los Angeles County, Lucero was the lovable character who would become a best friend after just one chance meeting. Friends called him Wolfman, for his well-honed impersonation of Wolfman Jack. Crooning oldies at karaoke bars and clubs everywhere including Martini Blues in Huntington Beach and the Blue Cafe in Long Beach the Wolfman could always be counted on for a stellar performance. "If you ever wanted … someone to sing something sweet that you could dance with your baby to, that man would get up and sing," said Donna deVillar, one of the owners of Martini Blues. After Lucero met deVillar and her husband, he practically adopted the couple, she said. He was a regular performer at their place and could be seen there every Sunday and Monday night. Lucero could be counted on to make every jam session and any jazz or blues music event, although his best performances were old-time rock 'n' roll. He often helped other singers at events held all over the Southland, but never took money for his work, friends said. And he was always popular with the ladies, but never took advantage of that fact, deVillar said. "His affection was always very sincere," deVillar said. "In fact, he was so thrilled because he had just been given a clean bill of health by his doctors, he was back at work, and he had a new girlfriend." An Army vet, Lucero had undergone at least three surgeries at the VA Medical Center in Long Beach to repair problems with his heart over the past year, his friend said. When he wasn't there for treatments, he would return to perform for other patients. While the cause of death will have to be determined by a coroner's autopsy, police said Wednesday that the preliminary cause appeared to be a torn aorta. Lucero was driving his Ford Ranger north on Pacific Coast Highway at Loynes Drive on Tuesday when he veered into on-coming traffic at about 2 p.m., said Officer Israel Ramirez. His Ranger ran head-on into a Ford Explorer, driven by a 19-year-old Los Alamitos resident. It didn't take firefighters long to pry Lucero's crumpled door loose and pull Lucero from the wreckage. He was talking, and in some pain, but appeared lucid and not too gravely hurt. He died after he reached the emergency room at St. Mary Medical Center, Ramirez said. "At this moment, detectives are looking into the possibility that it was a medical condition that caused the driver to veer into on-coming traffic," the officer added. His daughter, Liz Cervantes, said she was overwhelmed at the number of friends who came forward after her father's death, and that he would have been so happy to see how many people cared about him. "He was the kind of dad that could always make you smile, even when you felt pretty bad," she said, her voice quaking. Lucero didn't speak ill of anyone, and no matter how serious his own problems might be with his heart, or his diabetes, he was always ready with a smile and hug, she said. He lived for his four grandchildren, she added. "I just wanted to say, Dad, I got your message, and I love you too," she added. "He'd been so happy to see how many hearts he touched." "Know that I'm crying for you, but I'm happy to know that you're being well cared for," she said. "May God bless your soul and keep you…' Lucero was considered the ambassador to countless local karaoke clubs and bars, but he also worked for a carpet cleaning business in San Pedro and was well known in that community, friends added. "It was so ironic, because what he lacked physically, he had so much of spiritually and emotionally," deVillar said. "He had the biggest heart of all." Lucero is survived by his daughter and his four grandchildren, Larry, Jon, Michael and Sophia. Services are pending.

You can measure success in a fancy home, expensive car or dress. But the true success is one you can not spend. It is how your friends speak of you talking with friends. Wishing you tons of success. Love, Ty & Vicki

At Last ... your own website!!! Congratulations, Peggie! (and God bless Lauren for creating this website, too)! You're voice is heavenly! Speaking of heaven ... Mom's got to be proud. (She's probably dancing a jig, right now!) Bobby and I are looking forward to having you appear back at our club! I'd love to sing with you again and maybe my other favorite singers, Jackie and Gariann will add their "divalicious" voices to the mix, too! Okay, I'm throwin' it out to ya, sistah girlfriends! I can hardly wait for your upcoming CD, too. Your rendition of At Last gives me chills. I hope it's going to be on your CD. Okay, Peggy -- I'm making my request now ... to be considered, as your escort to the Grammy Awards. (After Wayne, Jackie, Gariann and family, of course!) I'm not giving up my spot in line to anyone else, I wanna be there when your accept the Grammy for Best Female Jazz/Pop/R&B vocalist!!! I love you, girl and now, via www.peggieperkins.com, the world will hear, see and be captivated by your astounding talent!

I'm so proud of you. Heh, what about inclusion of your stint as backup singer for the Invaders at the fabulous Bucky's Bar & Grill in Covina, your big break? I'm sure Japan was cool and all, but...
